Wood Description | Djindja Udu is a tree with a height of about 20-25 meters. The straight branch-free trunk is 18-21 meters long with a diameter of 60-80 cm. Fresh, the wood is yellow-brown to golden brown sometimes with a gray or olive hue. There is no obvious transition to the lighter yellowish sapwood and the wood (especially dry) has no distinctive smell or taste. |
Wood properties | Djindja Udu is a heavy hardwood species with the following properties: Volumetric mass (at 12%) : 950kg/m³ Bending (at 12%) : 89 N/mm² Shrinkage (at 12%) : rad. 2.8%, tang. 5,6% Durability The heartwood is durable (class 1) and the sapwood has good to very good resistance to insect attack. |
Machinability | Drying – Very slow with much deformation and surface cracking. Machining – Fairly good to difficult to machine both by hand and machine. Nailing/Screwing – Moderate (splits quickly), pre-drilling is recommended. Finish – Good. |
Applications | This hardwood species is mainly used in flooring, carpentry, interior and exterior paneling, furniture, shipbuilding, turnery, decorative veneer and paper. |
